37 – Septic Design

Now that we had water plumbed to the home site we needed a place for wastewater to safely go. Even though I’m a “do it yourselfer” there are times when you need to call in a professional. We hired out the design phase to an engineering firm that specializes in this. We dug several test holes so they could do percolation tests.

A combination of heavy clay and slow draining caliche required a substantial leach field design. We opted to increase the size of the system to accommodate a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home with multiple fixtures as the added cost didn’t add much to the entire project. We took the design to the county and received the required permit to properly handle our future wastewater. This is not an area I would ever consider cutting corners on, human waste is nothing to fool around with.
